Part of the BAFTA-winning series that reinvigorated F1 games.

Not as popular as maybe it should have been, this F1 game got more right than it got wrong. The game had plenty of licenses that meant they could make the game more realistic with the use of real brands and real celebrity drivers. The graphics were as to be expected for a 2012 game, which is a good thing, and the sounds were crisp.

It Could Have Been More Successful

Part of the problem is that the game only really appeals to driving and racing fans, and the F1 has a further niche appeal when compared to the smash and crash racing games and the street racer racing games. There is also the fact that the most circulated trailers didn’t show very much actual game play. It was mostly cut scène and real-life videos of people in F1. They Went For A More Realistic Experience

Codemasters, the company that made the game, actually used footage and data from young test drivers on F1 courses. They made a compulsively playable game that was truly immersive. They allowed people to capture the feeling of being an F1 driver. The company Machinima said it best when they said, “F1 2012 feels like it comes from a developer that truly gets the sport and has tried not just to simulate the handling of an F1 car.”

Different Modes And Options To Choose From

There are different weather systems that exist that will affect the way you drive and how your car handles. There are new circuits you can enjoy, and there are two new quick fire options you can choose that include the Complete Career in 10 Seasons, and the Season Challenge. There is also a 5-year Career, Co-op Championship, 16 Player Multiplayer and Time Attack Scenarios.

The Criticisms Of The Game

The AI can be annoying because they act as if they are real race car drivers, which means the game is incredibly difficult for most people. Also, despite the fact that the game is more of a simulator than an arcade game, people still feel they should have toned down the damage function because most gamers are unable to avoid collisions. Some people also complain about the penalty system.

Pros

  • Realistic weather systems and effects
  • Based on actual data taken from young race drivers
  • Lots of licenses for stadiums, brands and people
  • A very good F1 simulator
  • Logitech GT driving force makes it even better

Cons

  • The online multiplayer will not work for some people
  • Only appeals to F1 racing fans
  • The save-game bug may rear its ugly head for you
